| Things To See - Hexham Gaol |
 |
A short distance from Corbridge is the town of Hexham with many
buildings steeped in history. Hexham is an impressive mediaeval abbey town, full of
cobbled streets with an assortment of fascinating little shops. Twice a week there
is a general market, as well as an Auction Mart on the borders of the town - (a
cattle market). (Approx 5 miles from Corbridge and easily accessible by road, train
or walking.) Walking from the Market Square, through the medieval archway you will
see the Hexham Gaol. |
 |
| Do allow yourself an hour for this fascinating visit. This was
England's first purpose-built prison which houses the Border History Museum. The
Museum brings to life the turbulent nature of the Anglo-Scottish border life during
Tudor times. Listen to the "Tudor gentleman" and learn how dangerous this border area was,
and to discover the risky and dangerous lives of the Reivers. View the oldest underground cell that housed about 50
people at any one time, with no toilet facilities and the only way in/out was by a
rope! On the upper floors the history emerges together with an audio scene of the
times. |
 |
| (During the summer months Free walking tours around the town are available - meeting place just outside the Gaol.) |
